Do you want to be noticed in a crowd, but don’t know how? You want to change something about how you look, but are afraid to do anything that is permanent, right? If so, colored contact lenses might be what you have been searching for. Even if you do not use contact lenses as a way to correct vision, you can still use them to provide a change in your appearance.

Color tints however, are the contacts that are used to change eye color; these are what most people think of when color contacts come to mind. The color tint lenses have a deeper color added to the lens that allows the natural color of the eye to be completely hidden. These are the types of lenses that are available to transform the eye into something that is truly unusual.

The most important tip, do not, under any circumstances share your contacts with anyone. This is mentioned because most people that use color contact lenses don’t intend for them to be permanent and the desire to try them might over rule common sense. This is said strictly for your safety.

The visibility tint is a lens with a light green or light blue tint that has been added for ease of contact use, this is also very helpful if one is dropped, but does not affect eye color at all. The enhancement tint lenses feature a solid and translucent tint of color that does affect eye color, but only slightly. These color contact lenses are not meant to change the eye color, but rather to enhance it, to make it more intense.

Color contact lenses come in a variety of colors and shades. They are available in blue, green, brown, violet, hazel and grey with new colors emerging all the time. These are great for someone who is tired of how they look and want a temporary change. Color contact lenses are available in three basic tints, the visibility tint, enhancement tint and the color tints. Each of these types of contacts serves a specific purpose for contact lens wearers.

About the author:

John Mancini has been writing about Contact Lenses online and offline for a long time.

So, I have your interest and you want to know more about RGP contact lenses. Well good, you are now on the right track to learn more about the cutting edge technology of this corrective eye wear.

Gas permeable (GP) which are also known as (RGP) rigid gas permeable and oxygen permeable lenses are literally light years ahead of the old hard contact lenses.

When you get right down to the bottom line truth about RGP contact lenses, you are getting down to some really serious medicine for people with vision difficulties.

Let’s first talk about the old style hard contact lenses. Remember those! These contacts originally came out in 1945, and were made with a material known as polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA), boy that was a mouthful.

Now as I was saying, PMMA which is an emorphous thermoplastic with good optical qualities was used in just about all contact lenses prior to the soft lenses hitting the market in the 1970’s.

Which unfortunately for contact lense wearers back then was very uncomfortable and very difficult to get used to if you could.

But not only that! PMMA lenses was just not healthy for your eyes because they did not allow oxygen to pass through. Now this is one of the main reason’s scientists invented soft lenses and looked into the future about RGP contact lenses.

Ok, out with the old and in with the new.

Let’s talk about RGP contact lenses now. Gas permeable lenses first came out in the 1980’s. Now instead of PMMA, RGPs were made from silicone, which is more flexible than PMMA and more importantly they also allow oxygen to pass through the lenses to the eye.

This is vitally important for healthy eyes.

Now keep this in mind also, RGP contact lenses even allow more oxygen to get through to the eye than many soft contact lenses.

So the bottom line is, not only are RGP contact lenses more comfortable to wear but they are healthier for your eyes. This makes your eyes happy on all counts.

Now if that wasn’t enough here is another benefit of RGP contact lenses that doctors and contact lense wearers are excited about and that is RGP contact lenses are more durable and resistant to protein deposits than soft lenses.

Plus, they can actually help you see better. You ll also find that they are easier to clean, cheaper to buy, and last longer.

But…there always has to be a but somewhere doesn’t there…

Still as beneficial as RGP contact lenses are, they are still not for everyone.

They are best for people who have trouble getting great results from regular soft lenses. These could include people who are just very picky when it comes to their vision.

Or for people whose eyes have certain disorders that makes vision correction more difficult. This includes sufferers of astigmatism, who often find soft contacts lacking when it comes to vision correction.

Cosmetic contact lenses are a professional beauty secret that is hitting the mainstream. For years, stylists have given fashion models, actors, and actresses colored contact lenses to enhance or obscure natural eye color for striking visual effects. Rumors often abound about whether the stunning shade of a young starlet s eyes is natural or not, but regardless of whether the It-girl of the moment was born with those baby blues it is safe to say that colored contact lenses are a powerful beauty tool.

Many of the people who opt for colored contacts have light colored eyes but are looking for a little bit of extra power. If you want to give your baby blues a little bit of extra zip, or want to give your light green eyes a bit of special luster, consider looking into contacts that have an enhancement tint. Enhancement tints are translucent, so they capture the complexity and natural variation of your eye s appearance while adding a little bit of extra color.

Actors and actresses often find themselves cast in roles that require a total switch in eye color. For these kinds of drastic changes, only contacts with a full color tint can do the job. With an opaque color tint, you can turn your dark hazel eyes to a pale, dreamy gray. You can even swap your commonplace dark brown color for an attention getting shade of amethyst or violet. Whether you are looking to transform for a feature film, for a special event like a prom, or just to add a little something out of the ordinary to a regular night on the town, a contact with a color tint can do the job.

Color contact lenses certainly look great, but in some cases they may not be so great to look through. The center of any colored contact lens is clear, which allows your pupil free, unfiltered access to light and images. However, slight vision problems can occur if your pupil is larger than the center of the lens. Because pupils are constantly growing and shrinking in size so that you can see equally well in situations where there are varied levels of light, there is no way to size a colored contact so that you can be certain that your pupil will never be partially covered by the tint. For this reason, make sure that you have worn your contacts several times to determine whether they obscure your ability to see before you attempt any potentially dangerous activity, such as driving at night.

Tips For Contact Lens Wearers To Keep Their Eyes Happy

The cornea of the eye is one of the few “breathing” organs of the body. Hence, contact lens must be able to breathe in order for you not to experience the discomforts that many people encounter upon wearing contacts. Some contacts are better for some people’s eyes since some eyes are able to absorb oxygen better. Unfortunately, not all eyes react positively to a foreign object like contact lens. For some people, it takes some time for your eyes to adjust to direct contact with lenses.

The oxygen supply to the cornea is slightly less absorbed when contact lenses cover the cornea. When the eye doesn’t get enough oxygen, it becomes dry. Soft or flexible disposable contacts tend to alleviate this problem since the contact is very porous. A porous contact allows more oxygen to filter through. However, a very porous contact also filters more natural light than an eye is used to. To adjust for this problem, most people find they must wear a slightly lower prescription. Also, by wearing sunglasses outside, the wearer’s eyes become less sensitive to sunlight.

Another condition that happens when your cornea doesn’t get enough oxygen is a blood shot eye. A blood shot eye happens in response to the cornea looking for another way to get more oxygen. Since the cornea is without blood vessels, the retina pumps up its veins in attempt to absorb more oxygen. This response can lead to other problems over time like corneal neovascularization and macular degeneration disease.

If you encounter pain and swelling in your eyes while you wear contacts, immediately let your regular physician or optometrist know. These conditions are not natural for the eye and sometimes are caused by not properly caring for your lenses. Routinely cleansing your lenses with solutions is very important to remove natural deposits on the lenses and keep your eyes healthy. Special moisteners are available as drops for contact wearers. Since saliva carries nasty germs, you shouldn’t use your saliva to wash off or clean your contact lenses. Another tip to keep your eyes from getting irritated while wearing lens is to always fresh makeup so that it doesn’t flake into your eyes and slide between your lens and cornea.

Over 30 million Americans wear contact lens.

Have you ever wondered about the history of contact lens? How have they been invented? And how do contacts correct vision?

Your vision depends on light beams hitting the retina (the back of your eyeball) at the same point. When the light does not meet at the same point, vision becomes blurred.

To correct this vision problem a lens needs to be placed in front of the eye to compensate. The lens then becomes a ‘perfect’ eye and light beams converge together at the retina.

Even though eye glasses have long provided the needed correction for vision problems, contact lenses were a marvel of science allowing individuals the freedom to forgo the hassle of slipping, fogging and distracting eye glasses. The inside surface of the contact lens is fitted to the shape of your eye so it stays in place. The outer surface is shaped to the corrected curve (as in eye glasses).

Originally, these contacts were made of hard plastic that required saline solution drops on a regular basis to keep moist. They were also prone to ‘popping’ out and causing discomfort when blinking. Newer contacts are made from a soft plastic that allows the eye to ‘breathe’. They are much more comfortable to wear and because of the high water content of the material they require less maintenance during use. Soft contacts cling to the layer of tears covering the cornea and move slightly with each blink. This ensures that the eye stays moist and foreign materials can be safely washed out.

Basically, the purposes of contact lenses are to correct common vision problems like short-sightedness (myopia - when a person can focus on objects close to them but not far away) and far-sightedness (hyperopia - where the individual can see well at a distance but has trouble focusing clearly on print and other close objects). Now even individuals with astigmatism (where the shape of the cornea is elongated) or presbyopia (an age related condition that used to require bi-focals) can find contact lenses to suit their unique needs.

Currently, contacts are now developed in a disposable variety that means no cleaning is required. There are also contacts that can be worn for a week or even a month without being removed and cleaned - great for those who hate the daily hassle.

Many contact lens wearers are experimenting with changing the color of their eyes. While older versions produced harsh colors, new versions of color contacts (which can even be worn by individuals who have no vision problems) can be found in subtle shades and can even change dark eyes to light.

The contacts will be improved in the future. There is even talk of contacts created to prevent conditions like myopia from developing in children. Whatever happens, those with vision problems can count on new solutions being added to the currently available options all the time.

Have you ever wondered exactly how contact lenses help you see better? How did they begin and what changes have been made?

HOW DO CONTACTS CORRECT VISION?

Your vision depends on light beams hitting the retina (the back of your eyeball) at the same point. When the light does not meet at the same point, vision becomes blurred.

To correct this vision problem a lens needs to be placed in front of the eye to compensate. The lens then becomes a ‘perfect’ eye and light beams converge together at the retina.

While eye glasses have long provided the needed correction for vision problems, contact lenses were a marvel of science allowing individuals the freedom to forgo the hassle of slipping, fogging and distracting eye glasses. The inside surface of the contact lens is fitted to the shape of your eye so it stays in place. The outer surface is shaped to the corrected curve (as in eye glasses).

HOW HAVE CONTACTS CHANGED?

Originally these contacts were made of hard plastic that required saline solution drops on a regular basis to keep moist. They were also prone to ‘popping’ out and causing discomfort when blinking.

Thankfully contact lenses have come a long way from the original ones available years ago.

Contact lenses used to only correct common vision problems like short-sightedness (myopia - when a person can focus on objects close to them but not far away) and far-sightedness (hyperopia - where the individual can see well at a distance but has trouble focusing clearly on print and other close objects). Now even individuals with astigmatism (where the shape of the cornea is elongated) or presbyopia (an age related condition that used to require bi-focals) can find contact lenses to suit their unique needs.

NEW CONVENIENCE CONTACTS AND COLOR CONTACTS

There is an endless supply of new products on the market so every contact lens wearer can find the perfect solution.

Contacts are now available in a disposable variety that means no cleaning is required.

More advances are sure to be made to contacts; there is even talk of contacts created to prevent conditions like myopia from developing in children.

Silicone Hydrogel contact lenses are the latest development in soft contact lens materials. They are healthier than conventional soft lenses because they allow up to 6 times more oxygen to pass through them and increased oxygen transmission results in better overall eye health. Advantages of silicone hydrogel lenses over conventional soft lenses include: more resistance to protein deposits, less drying of the lenses, lower risk of eye infection, easier handling due to increased rigidity of material, and much lower incidence of complications with extended wear use (overnight wear). The convenience of 30 days continuous wear (PureVision and Focus Night & Day), as well as the lowered incidence of eye health complications are quickly making silicone hydrogels the most popular lens of choice for both eye care practitioners as well as patients. Most eye doctors believe that within the next 5 years, more patients will be wearing silicone hydrogel lenses than any other lens material.

The current brands of spherical silicone hydrogel lenses available, in order of highest oxygen transmissibility to lowest, are:

* Ciba Focus Night & Day which is approved for 30 day continuous wear

* Vistakon’s Acuvue Oasys which is approved for 2 week daily wear use or 6 night extended wear and is designed to be more wettable than the others and is therefore beneficial for people who have dry eyes

* Ciba’s O2 Optix which is approved for 6 days continuous wear or 2 weeks daily wear

* Bausch & Lomb’s PureVision which is approved for 30 days continuous wear

* Vistakon Acuvue Advance which is a 2 week disposable lens and has not yet been approved for extended wear.

There are also currently two toric (astigmatism correcting) silicone hydrogel lenses on the market:

* Bausch & Lomb PureVision Toric is the only silicone hydrogel toric lens available and is approved for 30 days extended wear use

* Acuvue Advance For Astigmatism - currently approved as a 2 week daily wear lens

Studies have indicated that some lens care cleaning systems are compatible with silicone hydrogels, while others may cause adverse reactions due to toxicity. Aquify, Optifree Express, and ClearCare multipurpose solutions have all been FDA approved to be used with silicone hydrogels. AOSept has proven to be an acceptable hydrogen peroxide based system to use with these lenses. In some studies, Renu Multiplus has been shown to cause an adverse corneal reaction when used with some silicone hydrogel lenses (source Contact Lens Spectrum, August 2005). Additionally, UltraCare and SoloCare are not recommended for use with silicone hydrogel lenses.

Most people would benefit from wearing silicone hydrogel lenses as compared to conventional soft lenses due to the health advantages, however, these lenses are especially useful in the following types of patients: people with high prescriptions; those whose eyes show signs that they require more oxygen; wearers who experience end of day discomfort, dryness, or redness with their conventional soft lenses; people who wear their lenses for more than 12 to 14 hours a day (including overnight wear); and kids and teenagers who tend to routinely over wear their lenses. Additionally, since the Focus Night & Day as well as the PureVision lenses are approved for 30 days of continuous wear, they can be considered as a useful alternative for people contemplating refractive surgery.

Silicone hydrogels may not be the lens of choice for all patients. These lenses are generally more expensive than non-silicone lenses so a more price conscious consumer may not prefer this option. Also, in some wearers, the silicone material tends to attract more lipid deposits, which may cause blurred vision and discomfort. There are some cases where a patient is not able to adapt well to the more rigid silicone material, which may result in some minor defects to the corneal integrity. These complications are rare and generally the health advantages and increased comfort that most wearers experience far outweigh the incidences of adverse reactions in those who do not adapt well to the material.
