Custom Contact Lenses

Custom contact lenses are available to be manufactured and fitted to suit a variety of vision and cosmetic requirements.

In particular, lenses can be specially fabricated for a range of medical conditions, such as keratoconus, aphakia, irregular astigmatism and high degree myopia. For such conditions, when regular off the shelf lenses aren’t adequate either to the power required or the actual physical shape of the lens requires specially preparing, custom contact lenses offten provide the best and only solution.

There are also a variety of special custom contact lenses for treating a variety of astigmatism types. Lenses such as front toric lenses, back toric lenses and reverse geometry contact lenses.

If a RGP type lens is preferred for a patient with for example keratoconus, high corneal cylinder, or perhaps after a traumatic eye injury, using corneal mapping technology might provide the best solution to provide the lens manufacturer with accurate data from which to produce the custom contact lenses. Indeed it might also be an aid in determining normal corneal topography. The most useful corneal map is the axial map with normalized dioptric scale.

Custom lenses are also a frequent solution in the case of special cosmetic requirements, such as color lenses that are able to make dark eyes appear blue, or even colours like violet and green.

Various companies offer custom tinting of contact lenses. The Softchrome Tinting system is an excellent procedure which can be performed in-house by opticians. The intensity of tint, color, Iris diameter, and pupil opening are all customizable.

A range of custom contact lenses with sports tints are also available featuring various colors for sunglass effects (yellow for cloudy days, green or brown for sunny days) all of which are helpful for those who for example play tennis, golf, baseball and other outdoor sports.
